Business and Me

This blog is part of the project that has dominated most of the last two decades of my life: to find a way to make my income doing what I love.

I think I have found the approach to business that fits for me, through a book by Mark Silver, which I recently did a review of, called Unveiling the Heart of Your Business.

Pricing
A big dilemma for me in business has been pricing. This is because of my attitude to the area I’m interested in. My interest is in health broadly defined (as including the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and social dimensions of our lives) and I think everyone is entitled to the basics of health. Access to the basics of health should not be confined to the wealthy. This is a dilemma for me because I need to pay the rent – and wouldn’t even mind being wealthy. On the one hand I’d prefer not to charge for the information I provide for people to improve their health, on the other I need to charge.

My solution (so far, all comments most welcome) is: to give away useful information on this blog, in my free report It’s Not About Success, and in my newsletter; and to offer for sale eBooks and an email course on my website, www.livingauthentically.org.

My plan is to eventually offer different products at a range of prices on the website. The cheapest will be eBooks on the basics for living a healthy life (Living Authentically and How to Thrive in Your Situation). These are available now. More focused eBooks, and different formats, will be more expensive. My first eBook focused on a more narrow subject will be How to Cure Boredom. I will also offer MP3’s (and later perhaps CD’s and even DVD’s) of my products for a higher price. Eventually I would like to offer personalised coaching, which will be most expensive of all.

Focus
By working through the exercises in Mark’s book I’ve got clearer on what I have to offer and who I think this would be attractive to.

What is different about what I offer? What I offer are processes, for people to work through their own experience, so they can live with less stress and more joy – this is the path of living authentically. My products don’t ask people to accept my opinions or solutions but give the opportunity for people to learn about their own experience.

Those who will be interested in my products, probably:

  • are well into adulthood;
  • have already had some experience with self-development books, courses or seminars or perhaps personal therapy. They are those for whom their experience of self-development or therapy wasn’t entirely satisfactory, or who feel that it was but are looking for something more;
  • are either dealing with past trauma, or may just feel that life should be more than they are currently experiencing.
  • value their independence and autonomy.
  • want grounded direction but not to be told what to do or how they should think, feel or act.

These are my thoughts on who I am, what I have to offer and the direction I am heading in. I would be grateful for any comments or feedback of whatever kind. Looking forward to hearing from you, Evan.

    hey evan!!

    really cool to hear the way you’re doing things.

    your site is always amazing and you keep up with content like a champion.

    i think it’s a tough one when it comes to selling content online. there’s so much of it. and also, giving it away free almost makes people devalue it.

    i think personal one-on-one consulting is best way to go – both money and value-rewards wise.

    also bear in mind that how you value your time is up to you 🙂 that can be really limiting or unbelievably inspiring 🙂
